An imbalance in our hormones can affect our moods, menstrual cycles, fertility, weight, digestion, skin, energy levels, cognition, and sleep.
Hormones, the messengers of the body are responsible for controlling all of our bodies processes: how to eat and what to digest, hunger, sleep, alertness, concentration, mood, weight gain, fertility, sexual drive, energy levels and so on.
Hormonal imbalances are quite common in our society and the only solution in the conventional model is to “replace” the lowered levels of hormones, using synthetic hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptive pills, often weakening the body and ignoring the underlying cause of imbalances. Hormones imbalances can manifest as bothersome symptoms such as weight gain, low mood and depression, painful and heavy menstrual periods, infertility, low sex drive, insomnia and low energy, to name a few. If left untreated hormonal imbalances can lead to more serious pathologies, such as reproductive cancers, down the line.
I love treating hormonal conditions because I get to play detective. I take a thorough history and use my knowledge of science and functional medicine to untangle the symptoms to find the root cause of imbalances.
Improving detoxification: helping the liver, kidneys and colon eliminate excess levels of hormones and toxic hormones found in plastics, cosmetics and household cleaning products.
Healing the adrenals and decreasing stress: stress can often be the underlying reason behind many hormonal conditions, from fertility to peri-menopausal symptoms to hypothyroidism. Improving the body’s response to stress and eliminating mental and emotional stressors is often the the key to restoring the body’s hormones to balance.
Nutrition and supplementation: proper nutrition can help the body excrete excess levels of hormones and balance blood sugar as well as provide the body with the building blocks to create hormones and neurotransmitters.
Gut healing: many hormones are created and processed in the gut. Body inflammation also often starts in the gut and can contribute to a wide range of hormonal imbalances, especially in the brain and thyroid gland.
Herbal remedies: to help stimulate hormone receptors and build hormones, bringing the body back into balance.
Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy: using hormones that are an exact replica of the ones naturally found in the body, BHRT can restore normal hormone functioning, while minimizing the side effects experienced from synthetic hormone therapy.

The Gut-Brain Connection
The gut-brain connection has gotten the attention of researchers and functional medical practitioners. I discuss, briefly, what research has shown us in regards to the complex realm of the microbiome and how depression may be a result of inflammation in the brain,...
The Stress-Depression Connection
When our minds are stressed, how do our bodies react? We experience something called "adrenal fatigue" that can closely mimic the symptoms of depression. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgl8PtcbAsk Hi, naturopathic doctor, Talia Marcheggiani, here. I'm a mental health...
Tired, Fat, Cold and Depressed: Treating Hypothyroidism Naturally
I have some amazing news—my patient is better. Whereas only a few short months ago, he was plagued by inexplicable weight gain, debilitating fatigue, depressed mood—convincing him he must be suffering from clinical depression—a sore throat and an inability to regulate...
A Whole Body Approach to Healing Anxiety
With 18% of the population suffering, anxiety is the most common mental health condition in North America. Through clinical practice, I've quickly come to learn that "anxiety" is a term that means many different things to different people. Its symptoms can range from...
“Fat” is not a Feeling
I'm tucking away at the cake again because the people who've invited me for dinner have dessert. Dessert: the gluten-y, sugar-y, dough-y sweetness of relief from deprivation, the dopamine and serotonin rush when the food smashes against my lips, teeth and tongue and...
De-Centred Naturopathic Practice
People seek out naturopathic doctors for expert advice. This immediately positions us as experts in the context of the therapeutic relationship, establishing a power imbalance right from the first encounter. If left unchecked, this power imbalance will result in the...
A Tale of Two Failures
Premature Ovarian Failure no longer bears that name. It's not a failure anymore, but an insufficiency. POF becomes POI: Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, as insufficiency is apparently a softer term than "failure". For me, it's another telling example of how our...
Balancing Hormones for Healthy Weight Loss
This is a common story that can describe any number of patients I see in my private practice: My patient has been doing well–she's been exercising regularly; she's been cutting out sugar and processed foods and watching what she eats. She's been having salads for...
DIY Rosemary Wine Tincture
As a student of naturopathic medicine, I didn't quite get herbs. They were natural, sure, but why would I prescribe them in lieu of homeopathy, dietary changes or nutritional supplements? I didn't get it. I liked herbs; I understood the idea of synergy—the fact that...
Let’s Talk Mirena (anxiety and hormone imbalance)!
I've been noticing a trend in my practice, which places an emphasis on women's hormonal health and mental health. Many women are consulting me for treatment of anxiety and panic attacks that have shown up in addition to other hormonal symptoms: painful periods, PMS,...
A Naturopathic Approach to Healthy Hair
This is likely one of the shallowest posts I’ll ever write—it's about hair. However, what is so shallow about hair? We all know the importance of having a good hair day. It seems from the moment we wake up, look in the mirror and notice that our top bun has left...
The Estrogen Metabolism Diet
Estrogen is the dominant female hormone. It is actually a group of hormones, called the estrogens, that are responsible for the development of female secondary sex characteristics: the development of breast tissue and the proliferation of the uterine lining. Estrogen...
