An imbalance in our hormones can affect our moods, menstrual cycles, fertility, weight, digestion, skin, energy levels, cognition, and sleep.
Hormones, the messengers of the body are responsible for controlling all of our bodies processes: how to eat and what to digest, hunger, sleep, alertness, concentration, mood, weight gain, fertility, sexual drive, energy levels and so on.
Hormonal imbalances are quite common in our society and the only solution in the conventional model is to “replace” the lowered levels of hormones, using synthetic hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptive pills, often weakening the body and ignoring the underlying cause of imbalances. Hormones imbalances can manifest as bothersome symptoms such as weight gain, low mood and depression, painful and heavy menstrual periods, infertility, low sex drive, insomnia and low energy, to name a few. If left untreated hormonal imbalances can lead to more serious pathologies, such as reproductive cancers, down the line.
I love treating hormonal conditions because I get to play detective. I take a thorough history and use my knowledge of science and functional medicine to untangle the symptoms to find the root cause of imbalances.
Improving detoxification: helping the liver, kidneys and colon eliminate excess levels of hormones and toxic hormones found in plastics, cosmetics and household cleaning products.
Healing the adrenals and decreasing stress: stress can often be the underlying reason behind many hormonal conditions, from fertility to peri-menopausal symptoms to hypothyroidism. Improving the body’s response to stress and eliminating mental and emotional stressors is often the the key to restoring the body’s hormones to balance.
Nutrition and supplementation: proper nutrition can help the body excrete excess levels of hormones and balance blood sugar as well as provide the body with the building blocks to create hormones and neurotransmitters.
Gut healing: many hormones are created and processed in the gut. Body inflammation also often starts in the gut and can contribute to a wide range of hormonal imbalances, especially in the brain and thyroid gland.
Herbal remedies: to help stimulate hormone receptors and build hormones, bringing the body back into balance.
Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy: using hormones that are an exact replica of the ones naturally found in the body, BHRT can restore normal hormone functioning, while minimizing the side effects experienced from synthetic hormone therapy.

Body Love
This post was written in the summer of 2012. Although I hate Mayor Rob Ford, I have to hand it to the man; he must really have a strong sense of self to not get himself down over the very open disdain most Torontonians hold for him. I wonder if my ego would take that...
6 Uses for Castor Oil
At a teacher training I recently attended, we were given the task of deciding what we would take with us if we were to go to a deserted island. While other people chose things like hatchets, food, water (and a boat), I automatically thought: castor oil! Sometimes I...
Why Do Italian Men Grow Mustaches…?
An old Italian joke goes: Why do Italian men grow mustaches? A: So that they can look like their mothers. Hehehe... Things are usually humorous only when they hold a certain truth and, boy, do I understand such a truth. Having Italian heritage on my father's side...
Channel Your Inner Diva
It's time to talk about everybody's favourite health topic: menstruation! My own personal story begins when I made the big switch from pads to tampons after joining the high school swim team and starting a part time job as a lifeguard. I started wearing tampons...
Almond Shells
When I was small I used to sit in a shopping cart, eating almonds off of the pile in the grocery store, while Nonna shopped for food. She would hand me shelled almonds to snack on, but she would buy them in bulk, with their shells, and we'd crack them at home....

Like all of the mothers of naturopathic medical students, my mother is reading the book The Supercharged Hormone Diet by Dr. Natasha Turner, N.D. I had the chance to flip through it and discovered a recipe for this easy "detox water" that Dr. Turner recommends to...
